# Childhood and Developmental Trauma

For adults still carrying what happened, or what was missing, when they were young. The patterns you built were the best your younger self could do.

Developmental trauma is less about a single event and more about the environment you grew up in. It can come from repeated experiences like criticism, chaos, or fear at home. It can also come from what was missing: comfort when you were scared, someone noticing your feelings, protection, steadiness, room to simply be a kid.

As an adult, you might not call any of that trauma. You may just notice that certain patterns keep showing up, no matter how much insight you have. In my work with complex trauma and PTSD (https://braveemberswellness.com/specialties/trauma-ptsd-therapy), I view those patterns as adaptive. They were clever solutions for a child with few options, and they deserve curiosity rather than blame.

How it can show up

* * *

## Echoes in adult life.

The effects of painful childhood experiences rarely announce themselves directly. They tend to live in the texture of everyday life. You might recognize some of these:

- A harsh inner critic that never seems to rest.
- People-pleasing, over-functioning, or trouble saying no.
- Feeling like you're too much, or not enough, in relationships.
- Difficulty trusting others, or trusting your own perceptions.
- Strong reactions that seem to come out of nowhere.
- A sense of not quite belonging in your own life or body.

None of this means something is wrong with you. It means you adapted, and those adaptations are still trying to protect you.

How we work

* * *

## Relational, paced, and body-aware.

Healing developmental trauma happens through experience, not only explanation. Our relationship becomes a place to practice something different: being met with steadiness, having your pace respected, and noticing what happens in your body when you feel safe enough to stay present.

Parts-centered work (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/parts-work) helps us understand the protective parts that formed early, like the critic or the caretaker. Somatic work and my Sensorimotor Psychotherapy training help us listen to what your body learned. My training in NARM (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/narm-therapy), a model focused on developmental and relational trauma, shapes how I attend to identity and connection in the present.

When specific memories still carry a charge, we may also use EMDR (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/eye-movement-desensitization-and-reprocessing-emdr-therapy). I completed S.A.F.E. EMDR training, a somatic and attachment-focused approach, and we only move into reprocessing once your system has the resources for it.

The ember inside

* * *

## What was never put out.

The name Brave Embers comes from a belief that guides my work: whatever you've lived through, there is something in you that pain couldn't extinguish. With developmental trauma, that ember is often buried under shame or survival patterns that began before you had words for them.

My role isn't to fix you. It's to help you find your way back to that part of yourself and tend it with compassion, curiosity, and care. You can read more about my background and training on the About page (https://braveemberswellness.com/about).

Who this is for

## Adults ready to look at the roots.

I work with adults 21 and older, in person in Doylestown or by secure telehealth across Pennsylvania and Arizona. You don't need a clear memory of what happened, and you don't need to be sure it counts as trauma. The guides on childhood emotional neglect (https://braveemberswellness.com/resources/childhood-emotional-neglect) and signs of complex trauma (https://braveemberswellness.com/resources/signs-of-complex-trauma) may help you put words to your experience.

When you're ready, a free consultation (https://braveemberswellness.com/services/free-consultation) is a gentle first step.

Common questions

* * *

## What people ask.

What's the difference between developmental trauma and PTSD?

PTSD is often linked to specific frightening events. Developmental trauma usually refers to repeated or ongoing experiences in childhood, including what was missing, like safety or attunement. The two can overlap, and you don't need a diagnosis of either to begin this work.

Do I need to remember my childhood clearly?

No. Plenty of adults have gaps or only fragments, and that's okay. We work with what is here now: your reactions, your body, your relationships, and the patterns you notice. The past often becomes clearer through the present, and it never has to be forced.

Will we talk about my parents the whole time?

Not at all. We talk about family only as much as it's useful. Much of the work focuses on how early experiences live in you today, and on building new ways of relating to yourself and the people around you.

Can childhood trauma work happen by telehealth?

Yes. Relational, body-aware work can happen over secure video from a private space where you feel grounded. If you'd rather meet face to face, sessions are also available at my Doylestown office, and we can choose together.
