# Nervous System Dysregulation

Maybe you've said it yourself: I feel out of control. I go 0 to 100. I can't feel anything anymore. Each of those is a nervous system telling you how hard it has been working.

Your nervous system is constantly scanning for safety and danger and adjusting your body to match. When it's working smoothly, you can move between alertness and rest: rising to meet a challenge, then settling again afterward. When it has been through a lot, that flexibility can get lost.

Dysregulation isn't a diagnosis or a flaw. It describes a system that learned to brace, react, or shut down because it needed to. In our work together, we treat those patterns as adaptive, and we practice the kind of steadiness that willpower alone can't create.

Two directions

* * *

## Too much, or too little.

Dysregulation tends to show up in two broad directions, and it's common to swing between them.

- Too much activation: racing thoughts, irritability, panic, feeling flooded, or going from calm to furious in seconds.
- Too little activation: numbness, fog, exhaustion, feeling far away from your body or your life, or struggling to care about anything.
- Both at once: feeling wired and tired, restless but unable to move.

The guides to the window of tolerance (https://braveemberswellness.com/resources/window-of-tolerance) and to fight, flight, freeze, and fawn (https://braveemberswellness.com/resources/fight-flight-freeze-fawn) explain these states in more detail.

Why willpower falls short

* * *

## Your body is answering old questions.

If you've tried to calm down by telling yourself to relax, you already know it rarely works. The nervous system doesn't follow instructions. It responds to cues of safety or danger, many of them below conscious awareness, and it learns through experience.

That's why regulation is something we build rather than force. Each time your system moves into a stressed state and then finds its way back with support, it gets a little more practice. Over time, repetition and a steady relationship can widen the range of what feels manageable.

Dysregulation often overlaps with anxiety (https://braveemberswellness.com/specialties/anxiety-therapy), trauma, and eating disorders, and we can work with all of it together.

Tools we may use

## Support for a steadier baseline.

Our foundation is relational and body-based. Somatic work (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/somatic-based-therapy) helps you notice early signs of activation or shutdown and practice coming back to center. Alongside that, I may suggest supports that work directly with the nervous system, when they fit:

- HeartMath (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/heartmath) and other biofeedback (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/biofeedback), which make the rhythm between your breath and heart visible so you can practice a steadier state in real time.
- The Safe and Sound Protocol (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/safe-and-sound-protocol), a listening-based intervention that uses specially filtered music. I'm a Certified SSP Provider.
- Neurofeedback (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/neurofeedback-therapy), which gives the brain real-time information about its own activity to support regulation.

These are part of the neurotherapies (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/neurotherapies) I offer. They never replace therapy, and we only bring them in when they make sense for you.

Getting started

* * *

## Steadiness is learned, together.

I work with adults 21 and older in person at my Doylestown office and by secure telehealth across Pennsylvania and Arizona. Sessions are paced to what your system can take in, and you'll always know why we're doing what we're doing.

If any of this sounds like you, a free consultation (https://braveemberswellness.com/services/free-consultation) is an easy place to begin.

Common questions

* * *

## What people ask.

What does nervous system dysregulation feel like?

It can feel like being stuck on high alert, with racing thoughts, tension, and big reactions, or like being stuck in shutdown, with numbness, fog, and exhaustion. Plenty of people experience both, sometimes in the same day. These patterns are protective, even when they're painful.

Is nervous system dysregulation a diagnosis?

No. It's a way of describing how your body responds to stress rather than a formal diagnosis. You don't need a label to deserve support, and understanding your patterns can be useful whether or not a diagnosis applies.

Do I need special equipment for biofeedback or neurofeedback?

It depends on the tool. HeartMath uses simple equipment that makes heart-rhythm feedback visible, and how neurofeedback is delivered depends on the equipment and protocol. We'll talk through what's available and what makes sense for you.

Can regulation work happen by telehealth?

Yes. Much of this work, like noticing body cues and practicing coming back to steadiness, can happen over secure video from a private space. Some tools have specific setup needs, and we'll plan around them together.
